Real EMS.... No, not the breathing difficulty at 4am. Not the bum sleepin under the overpass. Real EMERGENCIES as you and I would define them. And I'm talking about in an uncontrolled environment. On the street. You have to think and adjust on the fly. Assess while other PTs or family members are screaming and freaking out. No its not awesome taking a drunk bum to the hospital. But its great when your interventions may have saved someones father who is having a heart attack. Doing chest compressions and rescue breathing on a 26 week pre-mature baby to keep his heart rate up until you get to the nic-u, that is sad, but because of you that little girl survived.

We all work codes.... And rarely you get a save.... If you do, how does that person feel about you. Did you really do anything different than the others... Probably not, but the honor and responsibilty is in the fight. Not the results.

EMS is not about puppies and butterflys. Most of the time we see death at work. We see blood and pain. We're in the middle of it, but we don't shy away. We will help our fellow man. Regardless of success, if its someones time, then so be it. But we try to make a difference. Thats what we do.

Its rarely glamorous..... not always appreciated..... But when there is really an emergency EMS personel better know their shit and get it right. You better know your System Protocols.
